Netherlands striker Memphis Depay expects other European soccer players to join him in the Brazilian league before the 2026 World Cup. Depay, 30, addressed the media on Thursday at his first press conference as a Corinthians player, though he did not specify his reasons for moving to South America.

Depay, who inked a two-year contract, was introduced to Corinthians fans Wednesday night before their Brazilian Cup win over Juventude, which advanced the team to the semifinals.

'This is bigger than football,' Depay remarked at the NeoQuimica Arena. 'Brazil is the mecca of football; many stars come from here. Kids in Europe look up to Brazil and the way you play.' European players like Clarence Seedorf and Dimitri Payet have also had Brazilian club stints.

FIFA records indicate that around 1,000 Brazilian players leave the country annually, many heading to Europe. 'It's a great moment to bridge that gap,' Depay added. 'We always come to take Brazilian talents to Europe. This league needs a light from the other side.'

Depay, sidelined since the European Championship in July, cited getting back into rhythm as a key reason for joining Corinthians. 'Coach Ronald Koeman will see this league is competitive,' he said, mentioning advice from Neymar and Vinicius Júnior.

'Those in Europe don't know much about Brazilian football. It's time they see its potential,' Depay emphasized. Asked repeatedly about his reasons for moving, he noted, 'It's a decision moved by a lot of force behind it. I cannot fully explain my feelings.'

The Dutchman, a former player for Manchester United, Lyon, and Barcelona, will wear jerseys No. 94 in the Brazilian league and No. 7 in the Copa Sudamericana. Corinthians is currently battling relegation but is still in contention in the Brazilian Cup and Copa Sudamericana.
