Spanish soccer player Hugo Mallo has been convicted of sexual abuse after inappropriately touching a mascot before a La Liga game in 2019, court officials announced on Thursday.

Hugo Mallo, formerly with Celta Vigo, was found guilty of touching the breasts of a woman dressed in Espanyol's parakeet costume as the players lined up before the match began.

A judge ordered Mallo to pay a 6,000 euro (USD 6,600) fine and an additional 1,000 euros (USD 1,100) in damages to the victim. The 33-year-old, who denies any wrongdoing, plans to appeal the sentence. He also posted a statement on Instagram calling for "respect" and mentioned that neither Celta nor Espanyol found evidence of misconduct. Mallo is also liable for the legal costs associated with the proceedings.
