In a stunning display of power batting, Australia's star opener Travis Head joined the elite club of Aussie cricketers by smashing 30 runs in a single over during the first T20I match against England in Southampton.
Head launched into England's Sam Curran, hitting him for three fours and three sixes in the fifth over of Australia's innings at The Rose Bowl. The explosive over helped Australia amass a formidable total of 179, a target that England failed to chase down, being bowled out for 151.
This remarkable feat tied an Australian men's record for the most runs scored in one T20I over, putting Head alongside cricket legends Ricky Ponting, Daniel Christian, and Mitchell Marsh. The international record, however, stands at 39 runs in one over, set by Samoa's Darius Visser last month. Head continued his splendid form, reaching a half-century within the powerplay and building a solid opening partnership of 86 runs with Matt Short. Despite a late fightback by England, spearheaded by Liam Livingstone's 3/22, Australia secured a 28-run victory. The win gave Australia a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
On the bowling front, Josh Hazlewood (2/32), Adam Zampa (2/20), and Sean Abbott (3/28) delivered standout performances, ensuring England could not reach the required target. The teams will now head to Cardiff for the second match of the series on Friday.
