Less than two weeks after his shocking second-round exit at the U.S. Open, Carlos Alcaraz faced another potential upset during his opening group-stage match for Spain in the Davis Cup Finals on Wednesday.

This time, Alcaraz managed to turn things around, albeit with some assistance from his opponent.

The No. 3-ranked Alcaraz secured Spain's victory against the Czech Republic in Group B on Wednesday as Tomas Machac retired injured, with the score at 6-7 (3), 6-1 in Valencia, giving Spain an unassailable 2-0 lead. Roberto Bautista Agut had already defeated Jiri Lehecka 7-6 (1), 6-4, and Alcaraz, paired with Marcel Granollers-Pujol, won the doubles in three sets to complete a 3-0 victory.

These were Alcaraz's first matches since losing in straight sets to 74th-ranked Botic van de Zandschulp at Flushing Meadows.

Spain joined the United States, defending champion Italy, and Britain in securing victories on Wednesday. The American team earned a winning 2-0 lead over Chile in Group C in Zhuhai, China, with Brandon Nakashima beating Alejandro Tabilo and Reilly Opelka defeating Cristian Garin. In doubles, Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram sealed a 3-0 sweep.

U.S. captain Bob Bryan praised the day's matches as epic for both teams, highlighting the historic nature of all matches going to a third-set breaker.

In Bologna, Italy began its title defense with a 2-1 win over Brazil without top-ranked Jannik Sinner. Matteo Berrettini and Matteo Arnaldi secured singles victories.

In Manchester, England, Britain gained a 2-0 advantage over Finland in Group D, thanks to wins by Dan Evans and Billy Harris.

The top two countries in each four-team group will advance to the Final 8 knockout stage in Malaga, Spain, to be held in November. Successful teams from Tuesday's opening play included Belgium, Australia, Germany, and Canada.
