Congress MP Vijay Vansanth on Wednesday called on the Narendra Modi government to reevaluate the allocation of resources for Paralympic athletes, emphasizing the need for increased investment in training and infrastructure to inspire future para-athletes.

In a letter addressed to Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, Vansanth highlighted the extraordinary achievement of India's Paralympic athletes at the recently concluded Paris Paralympics 2024. The Indian contingent secured 29 medals and finished 18th globally, marking the nation's best performance to date.

"In contrast, our Summer Olympics contingent brought home only six medals, without gold, placing us 71st worldwide. This stark difference underscores the exceptional talent of our Paralympians and the untapped potential of India's sporting ecosystem," he said. The MP from Kanyakumari stressed the need for higher admiration and unwavering support for these athletes.

Vansanth pointed out the disparity in financial support, with Rs 470 crore allocated to the Olympic team compared to only Rs 74 crore for Paralympians. He urged the ministry to revisit these allocations and invest more in training, infrastructure, and support for Paralympians, not only to sustain their success but also to inspire grassroots talent.
