South Korean Soccer Star Son Jun-ho Tearfully Denies Match-Fixing Allegations

South Korean soccer player Son Jun-ho tearfully denied on Wednesday accusations by Chinese authorities that he participated in match-fixing and bribery while playing in the country, stating he gave a false confession under duress.

The Chinese Football Association (CFA) declared a lifetime ban on 38 players, including Son and five officials, following a two-year investigation into match-fixing and gambling as part of a crackdown on corruption. At a news conference, Son emotionally stated, "I never took part in match-fixing," and clarified that the only evidence presented was his false confession made under coercion.

Son explained he was coerced into confessing due to threats against his wife. The midfielder, who lost his spot in the South Korean side since the scandal emerged, was released and returned home in March after nearly 10 months of detention. He decided to speak out after being shocked at his inclusion in China's bans. Son described his detention conditions as harsh but clarified he was not mistreated.

The Chinese Football Association could not be reached for immediate comment. China's General Administration of Sport and other ministries also did not respond to requests for comment. Three former Chinese internationals were also banned for life. Son, who was playing for Shandong Taishan FC when detained, now plays for Suwon FC and hopes to continue his career.
