The President of the International Hockey Federation (FIH), Tayyab Ikram, stated on Tuesday his eagerness to renew bilateral hockey matches between India and Pakistan, saying he would start 'tomorrow' if possible. The India-Pakistan rivalry, according to Ikram, bolsters the sport globally.

It has been 18 years since the two nations last clashed in a bilateral hockey series. Ikram remarked that such series are beyond FIH's control, depending on federations' decisions amid political dynamics. He underscored the need for reviving these contests for the betterment of global hockey.

Ikram, who is set for a second term as FIH president, noted that Pakistan hockey suffers from financial constraints. Emphasizing India's role, he reiterated that India remains a crucial partner for FIH, both in sponsorships and hosting global events. Further, the FIH plans to reintroduce the Hockey India League and focus on promoting different hockey formats like Hockey 5s to engage smaller nations.
