Aussie Duo Purcell and Thompson Triumph at U.S. Open
Australian tennis players Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson won the U.S. Open men's doubles title, defeating the German team of Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz. This victory marks their first U.S. Open win, and Purcell's second Grand Slam doubles title. The match ended 6-4, 7-6(4).
Australian duo Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson redeemed themselves after their Wimbledon heartbreak by winning the men's doubles title at the U.S. Open. They secured a 6-4, 7-6(4) victory over Germans Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz on Saturday, finally executing their third championship point in the tiebreaker set.
The seventh-seeded Australians had previously missed three match points at Wimbledon in July. This win makes them the first all-Australian team to clinch the U.S. Open men's doubles title since Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde in 1996. They broke early for a 3-2 lead and held serve to take the first set.
The second set saw more drama as Purcell and Thompson again broke for a 3-2 advantage but missed two championship points before being broken at love. However, they managed to push the set to a tiebreak, ultimately triumphing on their third championship point. This victory marked Purcell's second Grand Slam doubles title and Thompson's first.
