Teenage sensation Caitlin Simmers has become the youngest-ever world surfing champion after triumphing in the World Surf League (WSL) finals in Southern California. Hawaiian John John Florence also claimed his third world title.

Simmers, an 18-year-old from Oceanside, secured the title by defeating 2023 world champion and Paris Olympics gold medallist Caroline Marks from Florida. This win marks California's first world title in over 30 years. "It all came down to an hour and a half of surfing; it felt like every emotion from the whole year was packed into that time," Simmers remarked post-victory.

In the decisive finals, Simmers clinched a historical win with two 9-point-plus rides. Despite her strong performance, Marks, a seasoned competitor at just 22, challenged fiercely with a near-perfect 9.6 score. Ultimately, Simmers prevailed with the highest total score in finals history.

John John Florence delivered a powerful and progressive display, defeating Brazil's Italo Ferreira to capture his third world title. Florence, who has faced significant challenges and injuries, performed remarkably in the finals day format introduced in 2021. He achieved the highest single wave score in finals history with a 9.7, demonstrating his extraordinary talent and resilience.
