American Yared Nuguse clinched victory in the 1,500 meters at the Weltklasse Diamond League in Zurich on Thursday, overcoming a high-caliber field on a night when the weather dampened world record expectations at the Letzigrund Stadium. Nuguse, who won bronze at the Paris Olympics, kicked for home in the final 50 meters, defeating Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who settled for second, and Olympic champion Cole Hocker, who came in third.

The race featured the top four from the Olympic final, but this time Nuguse came out on top with a winning time of three minutes 29.21 seconds. Olympic champion Beatrice Chebet aimed for the women's 5000m world record but had to contend with running alone for most of the race, eventually clocking in at 14:09.52, the fastest time this year. The weather and an early exit by the pacemaker impeded her record attempt.

In the women's 100 meters, world champion Sha'Carri Richardson ran 10.84 seconds, defeating Olympic champion Julien Alfred of Saint Lucia. Additional highlights included wins by Olympic champions Letsile Tebogo in the men's 200m and Grant Holloway in the 110m hurdles. The Zurich crowd was disappointed when world record holder Karsten Warholm withdrew from his race due to a hamstring issue. The Diamond League final takes place in Brussels on Sept. 13 and 14.
