Kapil Parmar has etched his name in history by clinching India's first-ever Paralympic medal in judo, claiming bronze in the men's 60kg (J1) category. On Thursday, Parmar delivered a stellar performance, convincingly defeating Brazil's Elielton de Oliveira in the play-off with a score of 10-0.

Earlier, Parmar was overcome in the semifinals by Iran's S Banitaba Khorram Abadi, losing 0-10. Despite the setback, Parmar showcased his skill and resilience in the subsequent contest. The J1 class in para judo is designated for athletes with no to very low visual activity.

Parmar's journey to the podium has been fraught with challenges. Hailing from Shivor in Madhya Pradesh, he experienced a life-altering accident as a child, causing severe injuries that kept him in a coma for six months. Nevertheless, his passion for judo never wavered. Supported by his brother Lalit and mentors Bhagwan Das and Manoj, Parmar persevered through financial struggles and continued to train.
