Steven Bergwijn's transfer to Saudi club Al-Ittihad has effectively ended his career with the Netherlands national team. The former Ajax captain moved for 21 million euros (USD 23 million) this Monday.

In commenting on Bergwijn's decision, Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman remarked, "sporting ambition is not the main consideration" for the ex-Tottenham Hotspur forward. Koeman confirmed that Bergwijn is unlikely to return to the Dutch team.

Bergwijn's departure from Ajax follows his participation in the recent European Championships and the 2022 World Cup. Ajax technical director Alex Kroes noted that Bergwijn was open to significant offers from abroad. Unlike Georginio Wijnaldum, who joined Saudi football for more playtime, Bergwijn's motive appears different.
