Striker Luis Suárez will play his last game for Uruguay on Friday, marking the end of a remarkable 17-year international career. The match, a World Cup qualifier against Paraguay at Centenario Stadium, will be his final appearance.
Suárez, visibly emotional, made the announcement at a press conference, stating, "It hurts to say it, but Friday will be my last match with my country's national team." Reflecting on his career, he said, "I am retiring because I want to step aside. I am 37 years old, there are a lot of talented players, and I know it would be difficult to get to the next World Cup."
Despite a controversial career that included being banned for biting opponents, Suárez is celebrated in Uruguay for his contributions, including leading the national team to victory in the 2011 Copa America. He is Uruguay's all-time leading scorer with 69 goals in 142 matches and has played in four World Cups and five Copa America tournaments.
