In a historic win, India's Kumar Nitesh secured his first gold medal at the Paralympics, besting Great Britain's Daniel Bethell in a gripping men's singles SL3 badminton final on Monday.
Despite losing his leg in a train accident at age 15, Nitesh's indomitable spirit and dedication saw him overcome the Tokyo silver medallist in a match that lasted an hour and 20 minutes, concluding with a score of 21-14, 18-21, 23-21.
This victory not only marks a personal milestone for the 29-year-old but also ensures that India retains its SL3 gold, which had been won three years ago by Pramod Bhagat when badminton made its Paralympic debut.
