Sri Lankan batters Dimuth Karunaratne and Dinesh Chandimal made significant strides in their Test careers on Sunday, ascending to fourth and seventh positions respectively in Sri Lanka's all-time highest Test run-scorer list. This remarkable achievement unfolded during the second Test against England at Lord's.

Karunaratne, who posted scores of 7 and 55, surpassed the legendary all-rounder Sanath Jayasuriya to secure the fourth spot, amassing 6,990 runs in 93 Tests with an average of 40.87, including 16 centuries and 38 fifties. Chandimal, with innings of 23 and 58, overtook Marvan Atapattu to seize the seventh spot, boasting 5,656 runs in 81 Tests at an average of 43.17, with 15 centuries and 28 fifties.

Despite these individual milestones, Sri Lanka's day ended in defeat. After winning the toss and opting to field, they conceded 427 runs to England, whose innings featured centuries from Joe Root and Gus Atkinson. Sri Lanka's bowlers struggled, with Asitha Fernando leading the effort with 5/102. In response, Sri Lanka managed only 196 runs, leaving them trailing by 231. Although Sri Lanka showed resistance in their second innings, they were bowled out for 292, falling short by 190 runs. Atkinson turned in a stellar all-round performance, earning the 'Player of the Match' award.
