Gus Atkinson's remarkable 118-run innings in just 115 balls, featuring 14 fours and four sixes, has placed him among a rare elite group of players. His performance at Lord's not only guided England to a commanding 231-run lead in the first innings but also marked his first professional century.

Following the milestone, Atkinson's father, Ed, expressed profound joy. He revealed that the achievement coincided with his other son's birthday, making the moment even more special. 'Ecstatic, obviously. Especially at Lord's and following up on his debut, it is just quite unreal. It is a marvelous moment. Such a thrill,' Ed said in a video from England Cricket.

Atkinson senior also praised his son's quick adaptation to the professional level. 'I cannot quite believe it. The names are all up there. There are great all-rounders and it is still early days but I am just so thrilled that he has managed to express himself with bat and ball. For us as a family it is just wonderful to see him succeed,' he added.

Gus Atkinson, in his debut Test season, has now etched his name on all three Lord's honour boards – a five-wicket haul in an innings, a ten-wicket haul in a match, and a century. He joins an exclusive list of six players, such as Gubby Allen and Stuart Broad, achieving this feat.

Atkinson's continued form could make him an essential asset for England, especially as an all-rounder at number eight. With upcoming series like the Ashes, England seeks consistent all-rounders. Chris Woakes, who previously held this role, has not been effective in foreign conditions. The team has experimented with players like Ollie Robinson and Ben Foakes, but consistency eludes them.

Effective number eight batters, such as India's Ravichandran Ashwin and Australia's Pat Cummins, have significantly influenced matches. England eyes Atkinson to fill this crucial role. His current average of 32.66 in seven innings demonstrates promising potential to stabilize England's batting lineup.
