Kimi Antonelli to Replace Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes Next Season

Italian Kimi Antonelli, 18, will replace seven-time Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes next season, as announced at the 18-year-old's home grand prix on Saturday. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff revealed that the decision was made within minutes of Hamilton announcing his move to Ferrari in 2025.

Wolff expressed high expectations for Antonelli, who will join race-winner George Russell at Mercedes. Antonelli, currently in Formula Two and supported by Mercedes since 2019, will be Mercedes' first rookie in 70 years. The announcement follows Antonelli's practice debut crash at Monza.

Antonelli acknowledged the challenge of stepping into Hamilton's shoes but expressed excitement for the opportunity. Wolff had considered Red Bull's Max Verstappen, but the Dutchman's contract runs until 2028. Antonelli will be the first Italian in Formula One since 2021 and the first with a top team since 2009. He aims to learn from Russell and contribute to the team's success.
