Manav Thakkar pulled off a nail-biting victory against the seasoned Achanta Sharath Kamal as U Mumba TT edged past Chennai Lions 8-7 in a thrilling showdown of the Ultimate Table Tennis 2024 held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai on Friday. The win catapulted U Mumba TT to the second spot on the league table with 29 points, overshadowing Chennai Lions who stand at 19 points.
In this clash of youth versus experience, the young Thakkar made a remarkable comeback after an initial setback to secure a 6-11, 11-8, 11-9 victory. Thakkar, maintaining an unbeaten record this season, was instrumental in U Mumba TT's triumph. Earlier in the evening, Thakkar paired up with Spain's Maria Xiao to dominate the Chennai Lions duo of Kamal and Sakura Mori 11-7, 11-10, 11-4 in the mixed doubles event.
U Mumba TT appeared to be coasting to an easy win, but veteran Mouma Das almost turned the tables in the final match of the women's singles. However, Maria Xiao's timely performance clinched victory for U Mumba TT. Aruna Quadri of Nigeria earlier secured a hard-fought win for U Mumba TT with a 10-11, 11-9, 11-7 score against Jules Rolland, setting the stage for the nail-biting finish. Despite Mori's win over Sutirtha Mukherjee in the women's singles, the day belonged to U Mumba TT. (ANI)
