Indian middle-distance runner Parvej Khan, known for his recent exploits in the NCAA circuit in the United States, has been provisionally suspended after failing a dope test.
The 19-year-old athlete could face a maximum ban of four years if found guilty of doping, a top source revealed.
The provisional suspension by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) commenced on an unspecified date. The banned substance remains unidentified.
Khan's dope sample was likely collected during the National Inter-State Championships held from June 27 to 30 in Panchkula, where he competed after a hiatus.
Khan had clinched the men's 1500m gold in Panchkula, clocking 3 minutes 42.95 seconds but missing the Paris Olympics qualifying time.
Earlier this year, the University of Florida student became the first Indian to qualify for the final of a track event in the NCAA Championships.
Hailing from a poor farming family in Chahalka village, Haryana, Khan has a series of impressive wins, including a personal best of 3:36.21 in the 1500m at the Portland Track Festival.
