Big-hitting Frances Tiafoe and former finalist Madison Keys boosted American hopes at the U.S. Open, both advancing to the third round on Wednesday.

At Arthur Ashe Stadium, 14th-seeded Keys swept past Australia's Maya Joint 6-4 6-0, while Tiafoe commanded a 6-4 6-1 1-0 lead when Kazakhstan's Alexander Shevchenko retired due to injury.
