India's Twenty20 captain, Suryakumar Yadav, is optimistic that a stint in first-class cricket will bolster his prospects of reclaiming a spot in the Test squad. The 33-year-old, who plays a pivotal role in India's white-ball teams, assumed the T20 captaincy after Rohit Sharma stepped down following India's World Cup triumph in June.

Suryakumar made his Test debut against Australia last year, but a groin injury and a crowded middle-order saw him fall down the selection ranks. 'Many have worked tirelessly to earn their places, and I want to earn that spot again,' said Suryakumar during a domestic tournament on Monday.

With India set to play 10 Tests over the next four months, including five in Australia, competition from players like Shreyas Iyer, Sarfaraz Khan, and KL Rahul will be stiff. 'I can't control selection, but I can focus on performing well in the Buchi Babu tournament and the Duleep Trophy,' he added, expressing his excitement about the upcoming matches.
