Djokovic Commences 25th Grand Slam Quest with Victory at U.S. Open
Novak Djokovic began his campaign for a record 25th Grand Slam title with a definitive win over Radu Albot in the U.S. Open first round. Despite some errors, Djokovic managed to overcome his opponent and will face Laslo Djere next. He aims to surpass Margaret Court's 24 titles at Flushing Meadows.
Novak Djokovic began his quest for a record 25th Grand Slam title on Monday, defeating qualifier Radu Albot with a scoreline of 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 in the U.S. Open first round. The victory marks Djokovic's return to competitive play following his gold-medal triumph at the Paris Olympics three weeks prior.
The 37-year-old Serbian showed signs of rust, committing almost twice as many unforced errors as winners during the night match at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Nonetheless, he effectively managed to overpower the Moldovan opponent, whom he faced for the first time on tour.
Djokovic, who had earlier researched Albot, avenged his family name—his opponent had previously defeated his younger brothers Marko and Djordje. The match concluded with Djokovic's powerful serve, setting up an all-Serbian second-round clash against Laslo Djere. Currently tied with Margaret Court at 24 Grand Slam titles, Djokovic hopes to claim the record outright at Flushing Meadows.
