France's Clara Burel fought back from being bageled in the first set to defeat 2017 champion Sloane Stephens 0-6 7-5 7-5 in the first round of the U.S. Open on Monday, kicking off the opening night session on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Burel appeared rattled under the New York spotlight but steadied herself, reducing initial errors to outplay her experienced opponent and advance to a second-round match against Victoria Azarenka. "I was a little bit nervous at the beginning and Sloane was playing really well," Burel reflected. "I just kept fighting and I found a way."

Initially, Stephens appeared dominant, utilizing her forehand with precision and making minimal mistakes. Burel could only watch in disbelief as the American closed the opening set in just 21 minutes. The Frenchwoman broke Stephens to love to win the second set, forcing Stephens to momentarily exit the court before the deciding set. Both players exchanged breaks thrice in a tense third set before Burel finally broke from the baseline to seal the match.
