Seasoned Indian shuttler HS Prannoy has announced a hiatus from badminton to allow his body to recover from the lingering effects of chikungunya. The mosquito-borne viral disease significantly impacted his performance at the Paris Olympics.
At 32, Prannoy has an illustrious career, including a 2022 Thomas Cup title and world and Asian Games bronze medals. However, a week-long battle with chikungunya just before the Paris Olympics left him dealing with severe joint pains, hindering his ability to compete at peak performance.
In a post on X, Prannoy expressed his decision to withdraw from upcoming tournaments to focus on recovery. Despite not specifying a time frame for his return, he reassured fans that he would come back stronger. At the Paris Games, Prannoy made it to the round of 16 despite his health struggles, only to be defeated by compatriot Lakshya Sen in the pre-quarterfinals.
