Waqar Younis, former Pakistan cricketer, has been recruited as a mentor for the five Champions Cup teams on a three-year contract. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced on Monday that Younis, along with Misbah-ul-Haq, Saqlain Mushtaq, Sarfaraz Ahmed, and Shoaib Malik, will serve in mentoring roles for the tournament starting on September 12 in Faisalabad.

The PCB stated, 'Misbah-ul-Haq, Saqlain Mushtaq, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Shoaib Malik, and Waqar Younis have been confirmed as mentors of the five Champions Cup sides on three-year contracts following a transparent and robust recruitment process. Names of their sides and squads will be confirmed in due course.' Previously, Younis served as an advisor to the PCB chairman, Mohsin Naqvi, on cricket affairs, but his advisory role concluded shortly before his appointment in the Champions Cup.

In July, ESPNcricinfo reported Younis was set for a significant role at the PCB to assist Naqvi in cricketing decisions. However, the recent appointment aligns him more fittingly in a team-building capacity. The combined experience of the five mentors includes 1,621 international matches, 32,780 runs, and 1,503 wickets. Naqvi emphasized that these experienced mentors will significantly contribute to bridging the gap between domestic and international cricket, fostering the development of emerging talent to represent Pakistan on the global stage.
