Joe Root's unbeaten knock of 62 anchored England to a five-wicket triumph over Sri Lanka late on Day 4 of the first test match this Saturday. Despite a shaky start at 70-3, Root, alongside Harry Brook, steadied the innings and led the team to victory under the evening sun at Old Trafford.
Chasing a target of 205, England finished at 205-5, securing their fourth consecutive test win this summer, following a 3-0 series win over the West Indies in July. This win also hinted at a potential shift in England's 'Bazball' strategy favored by captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum.
Sri Lanka was dismissed for 326 shortly after lunch, with Kamindu Mendis scoring an impressive 113. Despite some strong individual performances, Sri Lanka's mistakes in the first innings were detrimental. The second test is set to commence at Lord's on Thursday.
