Leon MacDonald Departs All Blacks Amid Coaching Clash
New Zealand assistant coach Leon MacDonald has exited the All Blacks following a disagreement with head coach Scott Robertson, despite the team's strong performance in recent tests. MacDonald's departure comes ahead of a crucial tour to South Africa, with other coaches set to take on additional roles.
New Zealand assistant coach Leon MacDonald has departed the All Blacks after a clash with head coach Scott Robertson over the team's direction, New Zealand Rugby announced Thursday. The departure occurs just prior to the two-test tour of South Africa, despite the All Blacks winning four of their first five tests under Robertson.
In a candid statement, Robertson acknowledged the relationship with MacDonald wasn't working. "Leon and I have had honest conversations for a while, and we agreed the partnership wasn't effective. We both deeply care for the All Blacks and believe this decision is for the best," Robertson said.
Assistant coach Scott Hansen and contact skills coach Tamati Ellison will assume more responsibilities for the rest of the season, according to New Zealand Rugby (NZR). The governing body affirmed the mutual nature of the parting and lauded MacDonald's contributions to New Zealand rugby.
