Germany's distinguished goalkeeper Manuel Neuer announced on Wednesday his retirement from international soccer, concluding a 15-year career marked by 124 games. Neuer, however, will continue his illustrious club career with Bayern Munich.
The 38-year-old Neuer debuted for Germany in 2009 and clinched the World Cup in 2014. His last appearance for the national team was in the 2-1 extra-time loss to Spain during the Euro 2024 quarterfinals. Despite being tempted to participate in the 2026 World Cup, he opted against it after discussing with family and friends, thus potentially paving the way for Barcelona's Marc-André ter Stegen to step up as the starting goalkeeper.
Neuer's decision follows midfielder Ilkay Gündogan's retirement from international duty earlier this week, citing fatigue and the pressures of a crowded schedule. Thomas Müller and Toni Kroos have also recently retired. Coach Julian Nagelsmann plans to rejuvenate the team, which had the oldest average age at Euro 2024. Neuer's innovative goalkeeping style has left an indelible mark on the sport, and his former coach acknowledges his significant impact on modern soccer.
