Shigeki Maruyama Joins Mike Weir's Team for Presidents Cup

Mike Weir has officially named Shigeki Maruyama as the fifth and final assistant for his International Team for the upcoming 2024 Presidents Cup, the PGA Tour disclosed on Wednesday. Maruyama, renowned for his three PGA Tour wins and impressive 6-2-0 Presidents Cup record, joins a support staff that includes Ernie Els, Trevor Immelman, Geoff Ogilvy, and Camilo Villegas.

'I am thrilled to announce Shigeki as my fifth captain's assistant for the 2024 Presidents Cup,' Weir said in a statement. 'His record in this event speaks for itself, but more importantly, he adds a trusted voice in our team room and is someone who will inspire these 12 players through his unwavering support and dynamic personality.'

Maruyama's last PGA Tour win occurred in 2003, but he continues to be a prominent figure in the golfing world. The 54-year-old is one of only six players in Presidents Cup history to achieve a perfect 5-0-0 record in 1998. He expressed his honor in taking on the role, reflecting on his meaningful experiences as a player in 1998 and 2000, and as an assistant in 2013. The 2024 Presidents Cup will take place from September 26 to 29 at The Royal Montreal Golf Club, where the U.S. team, with a dominant 12-1-1 record, will seek another victory.
