Three-time former champion Primoz Roglic showcased his dominating prowess by securing victory in the first mountain stage of this year's Vuelta a Espana on Tuesday. The Slovenian cyclist emerged victorious in a taxing 170km fourth stage, crossing from Portugal into Spain.

Roglic displayed his strength in the final moments of a scorching climb to Pico Villuercas, overtaking Lennert van Eetvelt from Lotto Dstny to clinch the win.

The triumph also catapulted Roglic into the overall race lead for the first time in the event, as he donned the red jersey, wrestling it from Belgium's Wout Van Aert. Notably, Portugal's Joao Almeida finished third, securing his second position overall, just eight seconds behind Roglic.
