Australia's star batter Steven Smith is open to batting at any position ahead of the highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy clash against India. Following David Warner's retirement from Test cricket, Smith was promoted to the opening slot.

Since taking on the role, Smith has delivered mixed performances. The 35-year-old has accrued 171 runs at an average of 28.50 across four Test matches, including a stunning 91 against the West Indies. For Smith, the batting position is inconsequential. "The conversations I've had so far indicate that we'll go to England. I'm there for the one-dayers, and then a decision will be made afterward. Different players have their preferences, but for me, it's just a position. Batting at four, I could come in after the first two balls. I've been in early many times and faced the new ball. It's just a number," Smith remarked to ESPNcricinfo.

Australia is desperate to win their first Border-Gavaskar title since their 2014-15 victory. The Baggy Greens have experienced a series of losses to India on home turf since then. Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting recently raised questions about whether Smith is the best choice for the opening slot. "The only question for Australia might be if Smith is the right person to open. It could all be about bringing Cameron Green back. If Smith doesn't feel it's the right spot for him, a change might be necessary," Ponting commented on ICC Review.

The eagerly awaited five-match Test series kicks off in November 2022 at Perth Stadium, with the final match starting on January 3 in Sydney. (ANI)
