Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal honored double Olympic medalist Manu Bhaker at his residence in the national capital on Friday, presenting her with a cheque of Rs 10 lakhs. Bhaker made history at the Paris Olympics by becoming the first Indian to win two medals in the same edition of the Games.
Alongside her partner Sarabjot Singh, Bhaker clinched bronze in the 10m Air Pistol Mixed team event. The duo triumphed over South Korea's Lee Wonho and Oh Ye Jin with a score of 16-10 in the bronze medal play-off. Bhaker also secured third place in the women's individual 10m Air Pistol event, becoming the first Indian woman shooter to win an Olympic medal.
In her final event, Bhaker narrowly missed out on a historic treble, finishing fourth in the women's 25m pistol shooting event. This achievement makes her the first athlete from the Indian contingent post-independence to clinch two medals at a single Olympic edition. Bhaker joins elite athletes like PV Sindhu and Sushil Kumar, who have also won multiple individual Olympic medals for India.
