Blanka Vas Wins Stage Five of Tour de France Femmes Amid Chaos
Blanka Vas emerged victorious in stage five of the Tour de France Femmes. Unfortunately, defending champion Demi Vollering lost her overall lead after crashing, allowing Katarzyna Niewiadoma to claim the yellow jersey. Despite immense challenges, the race remained fiercely competitive, with several notable performances.
Blanka Vas sprinted to victory in stage five of the Tour de France Femmes on Thursday. However, her SD Worx-Protime teammate and defending champion Demi Vollering lost her overall lead after being involved in a crash. Polish rider Katarzyna Niewiadoma took advantage and claimed the yellow jersey.
Vollering, in visible pain, crossed the finish line as quickly as possible to minimize her losses in the general classification. The crash occurred six kilometers from the end, during a sharp bend, right when the peloton was catching up with a breakaway group of three riders. Niewiadoma, who was third overall before the stage, capitalized on the misfortune to take the lead.
The final moments of the stage were an intense showdown between Vas and Niewiadoma, with Vas narrowly clinching the win. Despite her radio malfunctioning, Vas managed to outperform her competitors. Germany's Liane Lippert finished third. Niewiadoma, now wearing the yellow jersey, has a 19-second lead over American Kristen Faulkner, who finished fourth. Vollering's standing fell to ninth overall after the crash.
