Matt Kuchar's Unusual Finish at Wyndham Championship
Matt Kuchar extended his final round at the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina, to Monday due to a delayed tee shot. Despite being out of contention, Kuchar's return to complete his round led to a share of 12th place, earning him $134,695.
Matt Kuchar offered an apology on Monday to spectators who had to return to Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina, to watch him complete his final hole at the Wyndham Championship. Kuchar was already out of the running by the time he approached the closing par-four 18th hole on Sunday evening at Sedgefield. In fading twilight, he hit his tee shot left into trouble, marked his ball, and resolved to finish the next morning.
On Monday, Kuchar wrapped up his round with a par in six minutes after benefiting from a line-of-sight relief from a scoreboard near the green that allowed him to drop in the adjacent fairway. The 46-year-old American ultimately shared a 10-way tie for 12th place, securing a $134,695 payday. A bogey would have reduced his earnings to just over $77,000.
"Nobody wants to be that guy that's showing up today, one person, one hole. Not even one hole, half a hole to putt," Kuchar said on Monday. "So apologies to the tournament, to everybody that had to come out. I know it stinks, I know the ramifications, I know it stinks. Certainly, I apologize to force everybody to come out here."
