West Indies batsman Alick Athanaze led a spirited home resistance as he fell just short of his maiden test century, scoring an impressive 92 to help secure a draw in the first test against South Africa at the Queen's Park Oval in Port of Spain.

South Africa had declared their second innings before lunch on the final day, setting the West Indies an ambitious target of 298 runs. However, the home team proved resilient, managing 201-5 when the rain-affected match was called off with six overs remaining.

Earlier, South Africa resumed their innings at 30-0 and quickly set a high pace, with Tristan Stubbs scoring a rapid 68 off 50 balls. South Africa declared at 173-3, and despite taking early wickets in the West Indies' second innings, they couldn't secure a win. The second test begins Thursday in Guyana.
