Egyptian Olympian Wrestler Cleared of Sexual Assault Charges in Paris
Egyptian wrestler Mohamed Ibrahim el-Sayed, a Tokyo bronze medalist, was arrested in Paris on sexual assault charges but has been released with all charges dropped. The investigation concluded after CCTV footage review deemed the offense insufficiently serious. El-Sayed's Olympic journey continues unimpeded.
Egyptian Olympic wrestler Mohamed Ibrahim el-Sayed has been freed from police custody in Paris after sexual assault charges against him were dropped, French prosecutors announced on Saturday.
El-Sayed, who earned a bronze medal in Tokyo, was detained on Friday following allegations of groping a woman outside a Paris cafe. A statement from the Paris prosecutor's office clarified that the police custody of the 26-year-old wrestler, who competes in the 67kg Greco-Roman category, was lifted and all proceedings were terminated as the offence was deemed insufficiently serious.
The Egyptian Olympic Committee also confirmed that the investigation into the allegations has been shelved based on CCTV footage. El-Sayed, a five-time African champion and two-time under-23 world champion, had competed in Paris, suffering a loss to Azerbaijan's Hasrat Jafarov earlier this week.
