Young Indian grappler Aman Sehrawat faced disappointment as he lost to Japanese top-seed Rei Higuchi in the 57kg freestyle semifinal at the Olympics on Thursday, diminishing India's hopes of winning a gold in wrestling.
The 21-year-old athlete will now compete for the bronze medal. Aman, who had elevated hopes for a final berth with two significant victories in earlier rounds, was outmatched by the 28-year-old Higuchi. The Japanese wrestler, a 2016 Rio Olympics silver medallist, showcased his technical prowess, defeating Aman 10-0 in just over two minutes.
Aman had displayed incredible form earlier, defeating celebrated opponents like Albania's Zelimkhan Abakarov and North Macedonia's Vladimir Egorov, but the semifinal proved a different challenge altogether. Meanwhile, Indian wrestler Anshu Malik also faced a defeat in the 57kg pre-quarterfinals against USA's Helen Louise Maroulis, hinging her hopes on repechage rounds.
