Indian wrestler Aman Sehrawat advanced to the semi-finals with a spectacular performance in the men's 57kg quarter-finals on Thursday at the Paris Olympics. Sehrawat secured a place in the semi-finals with a commanding 12-0 technical superiority win over Albania's Zelimkhan Abakanov.
Later on Thursday, Sehrawat is set to face Japan's Rei Higuchi for a shot at India's first gold medal at the Paris Olympics. Sehrawat's bout began with him winning his first point due to the Albanian wrestler's passivity. He then executed a successful takedown, taking a 3-0 lead in the first period. The second period saw Sehrawat outclassing Abakanov with his skillset, propelling him into the final four. Earlier in the day, Sehrawat defeated former European champion Vladimir Egorov with a 10-0 technical superiority to reach the quarter-finals.
However, not all Indian wrestlers had a successful outing. Vinesh Phogat was disqualified before the 50kg freestyle wrestling final for breaching the weight limit, leading to her subsequent retirement announcement. In the women's 57kg freestyle category, Anshu Malik was defeated by USA's Helen Maroulis with a score of 2-7. Nisha Dahiya's campaign ended in the quarter-finals of the women's 68kg event, suffering an 8-10 loss to North Korea's Pak Sol Gum after leading 8-2 at one point but succumbing to an injury. Antim Panghal also faced defeat, losing to Turkey's Zeynep Yetgil in the women's 53kg freestyle round of 16 bout.
