The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President Sanjay Singh described grappler Vinesh Phogat's disqualification from the women's 50kg freestyle wrestling final at the Paris Olympics as 'extremely sad for the country.' He assured that the federation would explore all possible measures to support its athletes.
Phogat was disqualified due to exceeding the 50kg weight limit, dealing a harsh blow to India's medal aspirations in wrestling. She was set to compete against the United States' Sarah Ann Hildebrandt for the gold medal. Sanjay Singh highlighted that the athlete's night-long efforts to cut weight resulted in slight dehydration, which contributed to the issue.
The Indian Olympic contingent issued a statement acknowledging Phogat's disqualification, emphasizing the effort made by the team and requesting respect for the athlete's privacy. Despite the setback, India continues to aim for medals in other events. Athlete Avinash Sable is set for the 3000m steeplechase final, Mirabai Chanu will compete in the Women's 49kg weightlifting, and wrestler Antim Panghal will participate in the Women's Freestyle 53kg category round of 16.
