Simone Biles has reached the top of the podium once more, cementing her legacy as the greatest American gymnast and one of the best athletes in Olympic history.

Biles led the United States to a triumph in the women's team event on Tuesday, claiming her fifth Olympic gold medal and propelling the U.S. back to the pinnacle of the sport after a runner-up finish three years ago in Tokyo. Witnessed by a high-profile crowd, Biles became the most decorated American gymnast at the raucous Bercy Arena.

This marked the 27-year-old Biles' eighth Olympic medal, surpassing Shannon Miller's record of seven. Italy claimed silver, while Brazil took bronze.

Other sports had mixed results for the Americans. U.S. swimmers earned silver and bronze, but Kaylee McKeown of Australia overshadowed Regan Smith in the women's 100 backstroke. In swimming, Ireland's Daniel Wiffen also made headlines with a historic gold in the men's 800 freestyle, and British swimmers retained their title in the men's 4x200 freestyle relay.

Tennis events saw Coco Gauff left frustrated after an officiating decision led to her third-round exit, while Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz secured a doubles quarterfinal berth.

A severe heatwave in France added to the challenges, with temperatures reaching up to 41 C (105 F) in some southern regions, testing the athletes' endurance.
