Olympic Games organisers have issued a formal apology for mistakenly introducing South Korean athletes as North Korean during the opening ceremony in Paris.

As South Korea's athletes proudly waved their national flag while floating down the Seine River, they were wrongfully announced as representatives of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, rather than the Republic of Korea.

The International Olympic Committee addressed the error in a statement on the social media platform X, apologising for the oversight. In response, South Korea's Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism Vice Minister Jang Mi Ran has sought a meeting with IOC President Thomas Bach. Additionally, the ministry has requested South Korea's Foreign Ministry to lodge a formal complaint with the French government.

The South Korean Olympic committee has also urged Paris Games organisers to implement measures to prevent any recurrence of such errors. Notably, the boat carrying the South Korean athletes had a sign displaying the correct name of their country.
