This announcement is part of a major management shake-up at Audi and its Sauber Motorsport wing. Audi aims to ensure project autonomy and efficiency, as it prepares for the 2026 F1 engine era.
Former Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto has been appointed to lead Audi's Formula One project from August 1st, replacing bosses Oliver Hoffmann and Andreas Seidl. The major management shake-up, announced on Tuesday, places Binotto as Chief Operating and Chief Technical Officer at Sauber Motorsport. The Swiss-based entry will become Audi's factory team in 2026, aligning with a new engine era for the sport.
Binotto will be accountable for the operational management and racing outcomes of the team. Previously, Hoffmann held overall responsibility while Seidl, the former McLaren principal, was CEO of Sauber Motorsport. Audi's decision to bring in Binotto is part of a strategy to streamline management structures and ensure the project's independence.
Audi CEO Gernot Doellner expressed confidence in Binotto's extensive F1 experience. Audi is preparing for full ownership of Sauber and developing its own F1 power unit, with the aim to bring the project up to speed with clear responsibilities and efficient decision-making. Sauber has yet to score points this season, and future driver line-ups are under speculation.
