Suraj Panwar, a 23-year-old race walker, is preparing for his debut Olympic appearance in the mixed relay event at the Paris Olympics. Raised by his single mother, who worked tirelessly to support his sporting ambitions after his father's tragic death, Panwar is no stranger to adversity. Despite the lack of a training partner, he remains optimistic about representing India and is determined to give his best shot.
The event, introduced at the World Athletics Race Walking Team Championships earlier this year, will feature Panwar pairing with Priyanka Goswami to cover a combined distance of 42.195km. Panwar will tackle 22.195km in two legs, allowing for recovery in between. This unique format adds an extra layer of challenge, especially since Panwar and Goswami haven't practiced together due to her training abroad.
Panwar's journey to the Olympics was filled with uncertainty, particularly after his national qualifying timing was invalidated due to technical issues. Yet, he secured his spot through the world ranking quota. His perseverance has paid off, as he was selected for the marathon race walk mixed relay event, making his Olympic dream a reality. His mother, who has been a pillar of strength, advised him to remain focused, and now, Panwar is part of the Target Olympics Podium Scheme, ensuring his training and expenses are covered. This support has been instrumental in his preparation for the biggest event of his life.
