Tokyo's badminton gold medallist, Viktor Axelsen, isn't resting on his laurels as he prepares for the Paris Olympics. The Danish athlete is being cautious not to overextend himself, mindful of his age and recovery capabilities.

Denmark, a consistent contender in Olympic badminton, boasts nine Olympic medals, with Axelsen securing a gold in men's singles three years ago. Axelsen told Reuters that the sport's physical intensity is often underestimated, prompting him to balance his training regime for Paris.

'It's more challenging this time to time my training correctly and avoid overexertion,' Axelsen said. 'Before Tokyo, I could push harder and recover faster. Now, at 30, I need to focus on proper recovery.' He has recovered well from a recent ankle injury, which forced him to withdraw from the Singapore Open semis.

The main threats to his quest for another gold include China's Shi Yuqi, Malaysia's Lee Zii Jia, and his compatriot Anders Antonsen. Axelsen acknowledges the strong competition, noting that the level of play among the top 15 contenders is much closer than in Tokyo.
