Chennai rains: Memes 'flood' social media as residents relieved from water crisis

Chennai was struggling with a water crisis in the recent months after all four reservoirs that supply water to the city, known as the Detroit of South Asia for its flourishing automobile industry, ran dry this summer, largely because of poor monsoon rains last year. But recent rains brought cheer to the residents who were struggling to meet their daily needs without water.
People took to Twitter to express their happiness and #ChennaiRains soon started trending on Twitter due to the enormous number of tweets being shared by joyful Chennai residents.
Mahesh Palawat from Skymet Weather talks about the "gap" that Chennai braced through without rainfall.
#Chennai #rains are back after a gap of around 112 days. Last time #Chennai received light rain of 4 mm was on Feb 28. Trace on April 23rd. #chennairains #ChennaiWaterCrisis @SkymetWeather

The rains are expected to continue "on and off" in the coming days.
#Chennai may get on and off #rains in coming days. A feeble trough is running along the #Tamilnadu coast. #ChennaiRains #ChennaiWaterCrisis #chennairains @SkymetWeather
