Following a successful stint in London with more than 400 people getting arrested, Extinction Rebellion, an environment activist group, will be holding protests in Auckland, Thames, Tauranga, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch and Dunedin.
The group will call on the government to declare a ‘climate emergency’. Extinction Rebellion spokesperson Simon Oosterman said that will take the action that is necessary to make a change that they want to see in the world. Oosterman said they will be doing it in a peaceful manner. “Our main goal is to raise awareness of the crisis that we face and to reinforce that message that has come from the Environment Aotearoa report that we need urgent action.”
Another spokesperson, Rowan Brooks said the report is bleak and underplays the global crisis. “Without drastic action, we are heading towards an unrecognizable planet and widespread misery.”
