Historic Heat Wave Shatters Temperature Records Across Europe
Western Europe is experiencing an unprecedented heatwave, breaking century-old temperature records. The UK and France face historic highs, while Spain and Italy report unseasonably warm weather. Experts link these extreme conditions to climate change, underscoring the need for urgent action.
Western Europe is in the grip of an intense heatwave, with the UK breaking a historical temperature record twice over 24 hours. London's Kew Gardens saw a staggering 35.1°C, surpassing both the previous day’s high and a long-standing record from 1922.
France and parts of the Iberian Peninsula are also experiencing soaring temperatures. The heatwave, attributed to a 'heat dome', left residents sweltering in conditions 10°C higher than usual for this time of year. Climate experts, including Peter Thorne, emphasize the role of climate change in intensifying such extreme weather events.
Across the region, the high temperatures have led to a spate of health warnings and prompted reports of deaths due to drowning as people seek to cool off. The UK Health Security Agency issued an amber alert, highlighting the dangers particularly for vulnerable groups.
Meanwhile, unseasonably hot conditions in Spain reached over 38°C in Seville, with similar temperatures hitting Rome. Authorities continue to advise caution as summer approaches, urging the public to remain vigilant during this unprecedented weather.
