The number of stubble burning incidents in Punjab has reached 353 this season, with Tarn Taran and Amritsar districts leading the tally, as per the data from the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB). The last 10 days alone have seen an over three-fold increase in such incidents.
Despite a state government campaign highlighting the environmental risks, tradition persists among farmers who seek quick field preparation for subsequent crops. Tarn Taran district accounts for 125 cases, while Amritsar reports 112. Other districts like Ferozepur and Patiala also see notable activities.
The PPCB has imposed fines totaling over Rs 8 lakh in environmental compensations along with 149 FIRs being filed. Punjab's efforts show a substantial decline in cases over the years, yet the practice continues to contribute significantly to pollution in the broader region.
