More than 25 workers fell ill due to a suspected ammonia leak at a fish processing unit in the Baikampady Industrial Area near Surathkal, according to police reports on Friday.

The leak, believed to have occurred in the early morning hours, likely stemmed from the plant's refrigeration system. Symptoms of breathlessness, respiratory distress, and irritation were reported by several workers, who were subsequently transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.

While most patients were discharged following first aid, a few remain under medical observation. The Mangaluru City Police, alongside Fire and Emergency Services, managed to contain the situation. Authorities have commenced an investigation to determine the leak's cause and verify adherence to safety protocols. The factory is temporarily closed, pending a thorough safety audit by the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board.
