In response to the increasing threat of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in the Himalayas, the Jammu and Kashmir government is establishing an early warning system. This initiative aims to mitigate the risks posed by climate change-induced rapid melting, officials revealed.
To enhance preparedness, expeditions to glacial lakes such as Sheshnag, Sonsar, and Gangabal have been conducted, highlighting potential risks and environmental conditions. Detailed studies and real-time monitoring systems are being planned to further improve safety measures.
The initiative includes collaborations with organizations such as the National Disaster Management Authority. Efforts are underway to train personnel and develop comprehensive risk mitigation strategies to safeguard communities against possible GLOF events.
